What is a hot water boiler?

A Hot Water boiler works by using a fuel such as oil, natural gas, or propane gas to raise the temperature of an incoming liquid to a desired operating temperature setpoint.

Hot water, heating, or hydronic boilers as they are referred heat a liquid to a specific setpoint. These setpoints change throughout the year as changing outdoor air temperature varies. This is known as the outdoor reset schedule. When temperatures are at or below 32 degrees Farenheit, the boiler may run at an operating temperature setpoint of 180 degrees Farenheit. However, as temperatures heat up the boiler sets the setpoint lower or stays offline as no heat is required.
