What is an Electronic Mixing Valve?

An electronic mixing valve is a type of thermostatic mixing valve. It is installed as part of a hot water system in order to mix hot and cold water together.

The valve typically includes a temperature sensor and electronic controller which can be used to control water temperature by adjusting the hot/cold water mixture.

With a digital thermostatic mixing valve, water can be stored at higher temperatures. Storing water at high temperatures helps prevent the growth of waterborne bacteria and helps save on energy costs.

By mixing hot and cold water on demand, less hot water is used when a faucet or appliance is turned on. That means your water heater doesn’t need to run as often.

Ultimately, a thermostatic mixing valve can cut residential hot water costs by up to 40 percent.

How do Electronic Mixing Valves Work?

The basic concept behind a thermostatic mixing valve is simple. At the core, the device is just a 3-way valve in which hot and cold water enter from two separate inlets. The resulting hot/cold water mixture is then expelled through a single outlet.

An electronic mixing valve must also include some type of electronic control device. These vary by device from microprocessor-based external controllers to PC-based software controllers. The electronic controller is used to adjust temperature presets within the valve’s operating range.

Every digital mixing valve also has built-in sensors to read both inlet and outlet water temperatures. These sensors send temperature data back to the controller which then makes adjustments accordingly to maintain the desired water temperature.

Electronic Mixing Valve Benefits and Applications

Installing a water heater mixing valve on a residential hot water system has a range of benefits. Digital mixing valves can help cut energy costs and prevent the growth of harmful waterborne bacteria. Some mixing valves can even help prevent scalding by ensuring that tap water is at a safe temperature.

In terms of energy costs, a thermostatic mixing valve is a great way to save money. Using a mixing valve means water can be stored at higher temperatures inside the water heater. That means the heater doesn’t need to run as often.

By mixing hot water with cold water, you also make your hot water go farther. Mixing hot water from the heater with cooler water from the service line means you use less hot water overall. In this way, you effectively use less hot water every time you turn on the tap.

Storing water at higher temperatures also helps prevent the growth of waterborne bacteria. One of the biggest threats that thermostatic mixing valves protect against is the growth of Legionella bacteria.

Legionella bacteria are a main cause of Legionnaires disease. When hot water is stored at temperatures below 120°F, the bacteria can easily grow and thrive. However, at temperatures above 140°F, Legionella can’t survive.

Electronic Mixing Valve Applications

NYC Residential Building Hot Water Valve Experts

Ideal for Non-Instant Water Heaters

Electronic mixing valves are most often used in domestic hot water applications where traditional non-instant water heaters are installed.

Water heater mixing valves are not needed when instant hot water heaters are installed. However, in large residential or commercial buildings with non-instant water heaters, thermostatic mixing valves are essential.

Residential Hot Water Heaters

In a typical home, you’ll likely find a gas-fired hot water heater which must periodically reheat water to maintain a relatively high temperature. These applications are perfect for electronic mixing valve installations.

AETECH HP#7 electronic mixing valves are designed to reduce domestic hot water costs by as much as 40 percent. They are suitable for domestic hot water systems which use a recirculation loop with continuous pump operation.

Commercial Hot Water Heaters

Most commercial applications are better suited to instant hot water heaters than they are to water heater mixing valves. However, if your site is using traditional non-instant water heaters, then you can benefit from a digital thermostatic mixing valve.

AETECH HP#7 electronic mixing valves can provide stable hot water temperatures within 1.8°F of the preset temperature level. That means you’ll always have reliable hot water whenever you need it, even in large installations.

What is the Difference Between a Thermostatic Mixing Valve and Tempering Valve?

Thermostatic mixing valves are often confused with tempering valves. Tempering valves are another similar type of temperature control valve used in hot water systems, but they work a bit differently.

A thermostatic mixing valve is used when more precise control over water temperature is needed. A thermostatic mixing valve can maintain water temperature to within as close as 1.8°F (1°C) of the preset level. They can also instantly adjust inlet water flow to change outlet water temperature.

Tempering valves are not as precise. They are only able to maintain water temperatures to within 5.4°F (3°C) of the preset temperature. They are also slower to respond to water temperature changes.

Overall, a tempering valve is really only suited for installation in single-family homes. A thermostatic mixing valve is better suited to larger installations in apartment buildings, multi-family homes, and hotels.
